Capital Gains Tax Relief Checker

Answer a few questions to see which relief might apply — an indicative pointer, not a determination.

Possible Relief
Indicative only, not a determination. Real eligibility has edge cases this checker doesn't model — lettings relief remnants and deemed-occupation periods for Private Residence Relief, and the trading-company and ownership-period tests for Business Asset Disposal Relief in particular. Confirm your actual position with HMRC or a qualified adviser before relying on any relief.

Reliefs This Checker Considers

ReliefBroad effectTypical qualifying situation
Private Residence Relief (PRR)Full or partial CGT exemptionSelling your only or main home
Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR)Reduces rate to 18%, £1m lifetime limitSelling a business or trading-company shares you've held 2+ years
Gift Hold-Over ReliefDefers the gain to the recipientGifting business, agricultural, or certain trust assets
Spousal no-gain/no-loss transferNo CGT on the transfer itselfTransferring assets to a spouse or civil partner

This tool is a starting point for which of these to investigate further — not a substitute for checking the detailed conditions on gov.uk or with a qualified adviser. Several reliefs have qualifying tests (ownership period, trading status, occupation history) with genuine edge cases that 3 questions can't capture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this relief checker a definitive answer?
No — it's an indicative starting point based on 3 simplified questions. Real eligibility for each relief has additional conditions (occupation history, trading status, ownership structure) that this tool doesn't fully test. Confirm your actual position with HMRC or a qualified adviser.
What is Private Residence Relief?
Relief that exempts some or all of the gain on selling your only or main home from CGT, based on how much of your ownership period it was genuinely your main residence (plus certain permitted absences and the final 9 months of ownership).
What is Business Asset Disposal Relief?
A reduced 18% CGT rate (from a possible 24%) on qualifying gains from selling a business or trading-company shares, up to a £1 million lifetime limit, subject to ownership-period and shareholding tests.
Can I claim more than one relief?
Sometimes — for example PRR and lettings relief remnants can interact, or Hold-Over Relief can apply to part of a mixed-use gift. Overlapping reliefs are exactly the kind of edge case this simple checker flags for you to investigate further rather than resolves.
